As far as fuel costs are concerned...Diesel cost more per gallon...but will get better mpg with it as well.
Gas cheaper but worse fuel mileage. Averages out about the same if you ask me.

I had a Dodge/Cummins 12 valve diesel 4WD 1 ton I pulled/hauled over 20,000#s from Dayton & normally it got 24mpg, of course I had to turn the OD off & still got just over 20mpg. We had the same truck at work with a gas V10 that never got over 7mpg empty or loaded. HP=fuel burn & Torque=pulling poweer or load moved & is why diesels always have low HP & high torque & the less any engine has to work hard the longer it last.  https://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/texas/420197-six-million-mile-man.html  A 12 valve Cummins has no computer but you can double the HP & Torque just by tuning as Dodge detuned them because the transmissions wouldn't take the power. Takes about half a day but spend the $500 to beef up the tranny before you do. It was in Diesel Power mag how to tune it step by step & cost nothing.

I've had several 5.9 diesel pickups over the last few years..... I got about 24 mpg empty and around 14 mpg towing 6000#.
