What's the best and worst camper you ever had?My best was a 1960s Kit Companion.Double plywood floor with insulation between.Strong walls and roof.Built like a camper should be built. My worst was a 2008 Springdale.Floor rotted out and we had to rebuild it.We were lucky that we bought it cheap and were able to get our money back for it.

I have only had two so far.

Myt first was a vintage 1975 Great Divide 17 footer.
I fell in love with that thing. Great "feel" to it, very warm (in color) and cozy.

Sadly, it was a total disaster wrapped in pretty.
I never even got to sleep in it.

I now have a 2000 Thor Wanderer 230FB.
Much nicer unit, but very cold and sterile.
I cant wait to make it feel like a home this winter.

I posted on another thread about my disaster class C. The leaky, fouled plug, gas drippin’ battery eating express...

I bought a travel trailer in the late 70’s. It fell apart before it was paid off.  Quite the learning experience. I think Forest River learned from that unknown company how to build a disposable (throwaway) camper.

I've loved all my rigs. Lived in a '66 Chevy Suburban for a year before I made the minor error of marrying (got one helluva great kid out of the deal, so that was al to the good), then had a neat little pop up, used only for camping, but easy to set up, and lots of fun, and now the 1988 Roadtrek. I'd have liked to build out my own rig, but this came along, the price was right, and it's pretty efficient. I've pretty much removed all the extraneous crap, and if it weren't for all that damn particle board, it'd be perfect. But it's close enough.

Liz, the manufacturers worry more about keeping costs down than keeping it light weight and low toxins outgassing.

RE: Best and worst - RoamerRV428 - 09-05-2019

I had all good ones, lucky us Smile

Elkhorn Truck Camper
Jayco Featherlight no slides
Hartland Hornet with slides
Wildcat 5th wheel with bunks and slides
Heartland Torque Toyhauler 39 ft 5th wheel with slides (monster sucker which is when we realized too big is too big and then downsized and ain't ever going that big again Smile)
Heartland Torque Toyhauler TT...30 ft box, 1 slide, 1/2 size.....current rig and we love it

sucks people get bad ones....but we have been super fortunate. all our rigs had a purpose for what we needed at the time.
we were smaller then bigger til too big and now going smaller cause the older we get the way less we want or need Smile

RE: Best and worst - Everyroadleadshome - 09-05-2019

The four i've owned have all actually been decent little mass produced campers. My least favorite was an 07 Forest River Hybrid. It had one slide out that never worked properly but luckily always went back in with enough cussing, swearing pacing back and fourth angrily, messing with the slides, etc. That one camper has kind of soured me on slides all together

1979 E150 Van
1970 Datsun pickup (lived in it without a build)
Added a Kmart tent to the pickup
1976 AeroStar Van
1974 Dodge 1-t with shell/cap
added a 1976 slide-in Coachman Camper (loved that thing until I could no longer repair it)
kept the Coachman and bought a 1979 F-350 dually to haul it.
2003 Lance slide-in camper with side door entry and slideout (worst camper fell apart at the seams before it was 3 yrs old neither Lance or Dealership honored warranties once it left the lot)
2003 Chevy crew-cab dually 1t with additional airbag suspension (kept it for the farm) and moved into
2000 Tioga Class C
