plugin to read members private messages - Blacktank - 02-14-2018 i was looking at plugins for the site and came across one that will let the admin and mods read the members private messages,i will not be getting it but say someone who likes to control and micromanage everything might just use it,if you get what i am saying,no knowledge of anything just saying it's out there i was looking at go to first unread for gotsmart and live chat box and just browsing,i dont know how to add them, need belinda to teach me when free time comes RE: plugin to read members private messages - Gunny - 02-14-2018 Sort of takes the ‘private’ out of private. Rob RE: plugin to read members private messages - GotSmart - 02-15-2018 Sneaky spies. I do cause problems by my questions. At this point in my life, I don’t care if anyone knows what I think about them. I really prefer it. That cuts down on wasted words. I know for a fact that pm’s have a way of getting sent to the wrong people on the other forum. They have more leakage than the red neck house in DC. I have had some of the administrative staff there make snide comments that gave me proof that they are not trustworthy. So~~~ I go out of my way to mess with spying heads in pm’s there. RE: plugin to read members private messages - Optimistic Paranoid - 02-15-2018 I always assumed that the forum owner could read the private messages, kind of surprised that it ain't so. Probably due to my background as a Lan Admin on a state government network, where you KNEW Big Brother was watching what you were doing . . . RE: plugin to read members private messages - Heidi Mull - 02-15-2018 Admins/forum owners do have the ability to read private messages, but without the plugin you usually have to go through the backend to see it. In fact, if you know how to navigate the inner bowels of a forum, you can even see exactly what pages each member viewed and when. In fact, at the time - and this was VBulletin YEARS ago, I hope they've changed it since - you could even see a member's password. I learned all this back when I took over ownership of a mostly dead forum and was poking around to learn how everything worked. Scared the crap out of me. That said, it did become important to be able to read PMs when one member claimed sexual harassment via PM. With the agreement from everyone on the moderating team, we read other PMs by the member in question to determine whether or not it was an isolated incident. As it was a forum geared towards teenagers, we felt it was necessary to treat the matter with abundant precaution. As someone who has been on many forums, I tend to assume that private messages are never fully private from those in charge. If I want them to be, then I take the communication off forum. RE: plugin to read members private messages - Blacktank - 02-15-2018 i cant read your private messages and cant see your password but can change it,i can read the emails sent via site email RE: plugin to read members private messages - Optimistic Paranoid - 02-16-2018 (02-15-2018, 08:29 PM)Gary Wrote: i cant read your private messages If Heidi is right, you CAN, you just don't know how. Not that I'm worrying about it . . . RE: plugin to read members private messages - tx2sturgis - 02-16-2018 Why do yall think I turned of PMs (to me) on the other site months ago? I have left them on over here, for now. BTW...if you guys can install a flash-chat, chat-room, (or similar) program I would love to use that feature. Most are free or very low cost...or ad-supported during a trial basis. And many of them don't use any of the server resources at all, they are hosted separately and the admin here only has to set it up, then post a link to it. Some of them use the board credentials, to allow limited access, and some of them depending on the setup, can be used by anyone with the link. A chat-room for members is a lot of fun, and can be set up with several 'rooms' if needed. Moderators can drop by on occasion, adding 'credibility'. You can set up music to play in the room, special effects, or host a virtual 'campfire' or roundtable. Here is one of the best, and it works great: http://www.123flashchat.net/ And some free ones: https://www.webpagefx.com/blog/web-design/10-free-website-chat-widgets-to-make-your-site-interactive/ Something to consider...
