Just a WAG but in my old dodge 1960s pickups there was a little piece of bent heavy wire that went from the lock cylinder to the lock mechanism . They put some rubber like (heat shrink ?) on the end (ends ?) to I'd guess take up slack. It wore through and then it was hard to get the lock to work . Maybeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee just maybe your problem ?
stay tuned

Last time I had it apart.. I don’t remember seeing such a thing.. but I am going to take it apart again anyway.. so I will check for something like that.. thanks!
(The little plastic grippy grommets are all correctly attached.. I checked)

Hopefully there is something like that that's a cheap and/or at least easy fix. Maybe some place built in for mechanism alignment that isn't immediately visible ?
Of course by your model year they probably "improved" (cheaped out) the part that lasts for decades with plastic that turns brittle in 5 years... You'll get it , or you won't .
I'm sure no rocket science required . LOL
You're eons away from someone that just drops it off at the dealership and prays !

Once I get them finally finished (just the snaps and fitting left) I will show off the new barn door curtains.
Also, once it is over- I will share a car part fiasco story. They have been shady af and I will Never recommend this parts seller- ever ever Ever!
Trying to get the ol’girl all spiff for a trip up to Sedona for work.
She had a spa day- and got all her parts cleaned and treated and shined.. they just don’t make chrome like this anymore ..

New curtains are up- (just need to add magnets to stabilize sides, and hold insulation in winter…
Snaps on corners with pull tabs (that also hold rolled curtain in up or down config)
Used sacrificial wide measuring tape as de-flap on top and bottom edges- like a curtain rod..
Side facing window is black, and the vertical edges are not sewn together, so insulation and/or reflectix can be added as needed.
And in rolled position
