I get the unicorn and rainbows element of my point. We’re very unlikely to ever have grade A cells manufactured in the west. Lack of raw materials and an environmental protection agency. 

I'm glad you mention this...so many Americans think (and are told) manufacturing in the west is lacking only because of cheap labor in the east.

That's only part of the story.

Strip mining raw materials from the land, and the toxin-laden manufacturing process of all the ores, metals, chemicals, etc used to actually MAKE high tech devices is extremely detrimental to the air, the land and the water. Its called NIMBY. Not in my back yard.  

We Americans want that UnME-Phone 45 or sweet little 3900 amp ZingZong MPPT controller but we sure don't want the un-breathable air, un-drinkable water, and un-farmable land.

So..offshore it goes. When you have a nice shiny new blingy gee-gaw with the doo-dad options, I'LL BUY IT!

But please dump the remaining toxic sludge in the Indian ocean or the back alleys in Wuhan.
